Sister Mary Laurentine Lorenz, a longtime teacher at St. Joseph Institute for
the Deaf, died Sunday (Sept. 30, 2007) of respiratory failure at DePaul Health
Center in Bridgeton. She was 93.
Born in St. Joseph, Mo., Sister Lorenz entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of
Carondelet in 1936 and professed final vows in 1942.
She graduated in 1936 with a bachelor's degree in art and certificate in
teaching from Fontbonne College (now Fontbonne University). She earned a
master's degree in deaf education from Kentucky State University in 1960.
In 1939, Sister Lorenz began her teaching career at St. Joseph Institute for
the Deaf in St. Louis. In 1992, she retired from full-time teaching at the
institute. She then stayed on as a volunteer with the school until she retired
to Nazareth Living Center in south St. Louis County in 2005.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday until
the funeral Mass, to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Nazareth Living
Center Chapel, 2 Nazareth Lane in South County. Burial will follow at Nazareth
Cemetery.
Sister Lorenz had no immediate survivors.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet,
St. Louis Province, 6400 Minnesota Avenue, St. Louis, Mo. 63111-2899.

Best thing to do is to forgive her and let her go to God. No need to hold her back and re-live those memories. The past is past and let the past die in peace.

I understand what you meant about the forgiveness for what she had done to all of us. That is a good healthy example.
However, she had worked at SJI for 66 years. That is a pretty long time. Frankly, many of us think that she had never changed herself for the better person. Sadly, we were afraid to speak up for long time. We need to speak up for the good cause.
I want you to understand that there are thousands and thousands of SJI students (alumni and exes) who have lived with all the pain. Many of us have gone to see counseling because of this domestic violence at SJI.
Importantly, we are relieved to know that the SJI students at St. Louis, Mo. are in the safe and sound place without her.

I am an alumnae at that school. When I received the news about Sr. Laurentine's death from my dear close friend who attended that school, too. Was pretty surprised to learn she received her Master's degree in Deaf education when I read her obituary. Her education background got me wondered if she did learn sign language while studying Deaf education? I bet you a dime she sure did! She was pretty harsh on our speech learning. I don't recall anyone who admired her. She created a horrible speech card for us to keep in our pockets daily. There are a lot of stories on those speech cards. I just figured her age when she taught us. She was pretty too old at that time. No wonder she was grumpy all the time and the school principal never evaluated her in the classroom which the school system should do. I had notified the death announcement to my mom and she went, "Oh. which way she went, heaven or hell (with the finger pointing up or down)?" God bless everyone who knew her.

Good points! Yeah right on the principal should have evaluated on that Speech teacher nun! Oh geez whiz!!

Yes, I was surprised to learn that she had received her Masters degree in deaf education in 1960. At this point, I truly think that she had conzened to shun the sign language issue to learn how to handle deaf students properly, nevertheless, she never did. How sad.
I realized that during that time, there were no school counselors at SJIs. I recalled the reason why we could NOT speak to them in order to protect ourselves and others for the good cause. I also realized that the school principal had never evaluated her. I would never understand why they had never done to her in the evaluation performances over the years.
Most importantly, we all know that the kids at SJI in St. Louis, MO are in safe and sound right now. That is what we want.

Forgiving Sr. Laurentine is fine, but not for my inner feelings for what she and other nuns did to me physically and mentally. I had a hard time with the abuses I went through for 6 years while I was there. My parents did not believe me all the stories I had bad experiences there.
I admitted that I had to see counseling for a while to deal with the pains I had for years. I am ok, but decided not to go back to St. Joseph's. Since I left 1972 (my classmate..1973), I went back once. I had my body shaken up very badly when I saw the nuns....it was my conscious and could not help it.
I wish that I could have law suit for them to pay back my 6 years education. It wasn't worth it at all for me to go there. I have a deaf family...and I would not let my two deaf kids going there at all. No thanks...
Now, it is up to God to make the judgement on her behaviors and all what she did to us.
I have my master's in Counseling and working with clients for almost 25 years...I can understand others' pains.
